Anyone else have any characters that most people seem to really like, but you can't stand them? I have a few, but I'll just name one villain and one good guy that, even though they are among the most popular, I just can't stand them. You can post as many or as few as you'd like; you don't have to follow my example of just one of each. I'm just curious to see some other viewpoints. Anyway, here goes. Good guy: Vegeta. Don't get me wrong. I understand the reason he is so popular, and I can respect him as a character, but that doesn't mean I have to like him. I just don't feel like he has earned his place as Goku's rival. It's always seemed one-sided to me. I just see him as a spoiled kid who can't handle not being the best. Yeah, he has a goal of becoming stronger, and beating Goku, but Goku doesn't really seem to care. If you ask me, the Goku/Piccolo rivalry made more sense. Villain: Broly Yeah. You read that correctly. I cannot stand this guy. I really don't get the appeal. In my opinion, he's very one dimensional, his design is lazy, and his motives are contrived. After a certain point, the only thing he ever said as "Kakarrot!". It's like they took all the traits I hate about Vegeta, multiplied them tenfold, and injected them into what looks like a giant Super Trunks with no pupils. (Accidental rant alert) I don't get the idea that, in the first movie, at least, he was stronger than Cell. If he were, he would have won. Goku hadn't even finished training for the Cell Games yet, and even when he did, he wasn't nearly strong enough to beat Cell. Gohan was still unaware of his dormant abilities, and everyone else was weakened so much from the fight that they couldn't possibly have given enough energy to Goku, who was also on his last leg, for him to be able to beat someone who was stronger than Cell. Well, that got a bit out of hand there, but I do still believe those things, so I'll just add a rant warning before it starts. Sorry about that. But, yeah. Those are the two big ones for me. Anyone else wanna share? |

This is one of those moments where everyone on the forum will get together and agree, and then they'll scream: "VEGETA!" |
Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?! Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power. | |

I would say Vegeta for the popular characters, but honestly, he's got lots of naysayers to counterbalance. DBS Goku is the same. So I guess I'll go with Cabba, who's just really boring, imo. Look at him, he's another Saiyan and that's it. He might as well be a Tarble clone and that's that. Broly is loathed, so yeah. For a popular villain, I'll go with Cooler. He is decaf Freeza |

Vegeta by far, specifically his Boo Arc self. Such a whiny, self serving character. All the characterization, all the development he had in the Cell Arc, gone...because oh my, poor Vegeta's weaker than Goku again. How weird....btw...spoilers...Dumbledore dies...tell me something that isn't new. A huge manchild that people love apparently because they think he's cool when in fact he's a little child who whines and cries until he gets the toy he wants. The only thing I can say is that now a days, people are becoming more aware of Vegeta's huge flaws here. But in the past...oh man. Vegeta was so cool man. Majin Vegeta was so badass, and his sacrifice was so sad..and no it wasn't. --- --- I'm also going to nominate Gogeta. While not necessarily a bad character, he's not much of a character. Yet people love him so much they think he can rival the likes of Vegetto despite Potaras being far...far stronger. He's treated as a god when he's barley made an impact at all. --- --- I can't say much on villains, I think most of them are either balanced or more or less deserve their popularity. I think Cooler is indeed pretty much a Freeza clone, but I also enjoy Cooler and think he's an overall cool and badass villain. |

Tenshinhan. After Dragon Ball he became totally uninteresting, devoid of personality, and all people cling to with him is that he's the strongest Earthling, but according to Toriyama, he isn't even that. |

DBZ Goku, especially before the Boo arc. The fact that he makes some mistakes in the Boo arc makes him more human to me and he actually seems like more of an interesting character. I think the silly Goku in DBS is pretty funny and a good character. |

Vegeta of course. Can't stand his arrogance or his role in usurping the structural framework of the manga to hegemonise it around the Saiyans. |

I like the idea of Cooler, but the execution was lacking a bit, to me anyway. Actually, if it hadn't been for Broly being so unjustifiably (in my opinion) popular that he got three movies, Cooler would probably be my least favorite. I honestly think it's worse when they have a good idea, but execute it the wrong way. At least when a character is just complete garbage, I don't get disappointed by anything they do, because I don't have any expectations. Cooler could have been great, but, as it stands, I think he's just a big missed opportunity. |

Broly: I didn't hate Broly from beginning. I just didn't like him much. I don't get why he is so hyped. I guess it's because the "Legendary" Super Saiyan. He is pretty much dumb, can't say a word besides "KAKAROTT!!!". Looks like Super Trunks with Roids 10x. Also; why does he hate Goku so much? Just because he cried when he was a baby and he couldn't sleep in peace? WTF. Why doesn't he hate Vegeta that much. That guy whose father attempted to kill him and his father? But nope; A baby goku who cries too much is worse ofc. I started hating Broly because of the Brolytards. With their ridiculous theorys that he is the strongest of all etc. So..yeah. |

I always feel hating Vegeta because you think he's whiny or entitled is perfectly fine for humans living a pretty ordinary happy life but for a saiyan who was raised to be bloodthirsty and give in to that nature, plus ave his entire species destroyed and be raised in an environment where it's literally his day to day routine to cause the extinction of countless billions of species...yeah, the guy may be a little 'whiny' or 'entitled' if he was raised to believe his power was all that ever mattered. The very fact that a guy like that even has it in him to love a family and protect the Earth is a miracle, even if it gets a bit rocky at times. Sorry it just erks me to think anyone would consider a life like that 'privileged'. That's a horrible life. Living the conditions which would make a person WANT to be like that is the tragedy of his character which he was eventually able to fully move past thanks to Goku and his family and at the end of Z he's grateful to them. Vegeta's behaviour always made sense considering his ridiculous past. I don't think Tien is all that. He seems obsessed with nothing but fighting and training. People s*** on Yamcha but the guy just had a life outside of martial arts as did Krillin but Krillin went through more and became stronger. Tien seems to take himself very seriously and never really seemed to grow as a person other than when he gave up being an assassin way back in Dragon Ball. As for villains. Kid/Pure Buu. He's just a dumb maniac who really wasn't around that long. Plus he was just 'pure evil monster' cliche. Edited by superperfectnerd, Aug 9 2016, 01:18 AM.

To be honest, it's not so much the character as it is what they did with him. It was almost exactly the same as the fight with Frieza. Goku is hurt. The others fight in his place. Goku is healed just in time to save the day. The two are, more or less, evenly matched. They power up. Goku is losing. Goku transforms. And, once again, the day is saved, thanks to: the Powerp... The Super Saiyan. Granted, that has more to the movie than the character, but you can really only judge someone by what they do, and how they would react to the situations around them. That's why I feel so mad about him. His personality and his pride for his family are interesting bits, but they just aren't explored enough. |

That doesn't fly when you realize that both Raditz and Nappa had better moral fiber despite the exact same upbringing. Nappa in particular actually shows care for his comrades. Vegeta on the other hand, callously kills his own allies and doesn't care in the least about their race's extinction. Not to mention that if the life was so bad, why did he want to return to it? He said so himself that he wanted to be like he was back in the old days, and not for any reason besides the fact that it'd give him an edge on Goku.
Given he enjoyed it, it certainly seems privileged. No one was forcing him to stay Freeza's dog, he could have gone into hiding like Tarble did and avoided all of it. Besides, Freeza had him on a ridiculously long leash. He could go AWOL without any consequences.
Problem is that he's worse than a good portion of Freeza's soldiers. He's worse than Nappa and the Ginyu Force, simply because they seemed to at least care a bit for their allies and friends, while Vegeta had a smile as he exploded his one friend and one of the last Saiyans. But even if he had this truly horrible past, the problem lies in the fact that Vegeta himself doesn't make a big deal about it. He's only pissy over Goku because he thinks Goku doesn't deserve to be the best. It's purely jealousy, and the fact that he sells his soul over it is the whiny part. The entitled part is thinking he deserves to be the strongest because he's a prince, not because of his training. |
